How to Behave at an Interview

An invitation to an interview means that an employer believes you have the potential to do
the job and it is your chance to convince the recruiter that you are the right person. This is
your chance to back up everything the employer has read about you in your CV and cover
letter, which cannot secure you a job on their own. Interviews can be an extremely
daunting and nerve-racking experience and although unfair, but true, first impressions are
immensely important and the initial seconds of the interview can determine how you are
judged!!
So... how can you guarantee a good interview, sell yourself in the best way and be
successful?
Top Tips

Thorough research and self-awareness

Be careful not to be over-confident - you do not want to come across as arrogant!
Preparation

Preparation cannot be over-stated and this is the first rule for any interview. To help
prepare yourself and make sure that your performance gets you the job, we have provided
you with some general preparation tips:

Research the company, its competitors, position in the marketplace and
challenges/developments within the industry. Know what it's products are, its size,
income, reputation, image, goals, problems. How many people do they employ and
what is the company philosophy? Know all of the up to date information on the
company, which can then be slipped into conversation.

Practice for the interview but do not memorise or over-rehearse. Get a friend or colleague to do a mock interview with you to get used to being asked questions and how you portray yourself to others.

Prepare a list of questions that you think might be asked and plan your answers. A
useful tip is to look at the job description - this should enable you to define the
qualities the recruiter is looking for and emphasise the skills and experiences that
you have which best demonstrate them.

Think of any questions you would like to ask the recruiter about the company and the position you are applying for. This shows you have done some homework and are interested in the company and its business.

Dress the part for the job, the company and industry. It is important to portray a
smart business image and it is recommended that both men and women wear suits
and sensible shoes.

Read through your CV and cover letter before you attend the interview.

10 Tips for Approaching Women

What do you do when you see a woman you are attracted to? Do you run and hide? Do you use some canned line that you read on the Internet? Do you stand there in fear trying to think of the right thing to say? What is the right thing to do?
When approaching a woman, most guys make the mistake of thinking too much about what to say. They believe there's one magic line that will work in all situations. They rehearse this magic line, and when they deliver it, they hope the woman will become instantly attracted to them.
Unfortunately, rarely does this approach work -- because most of what you say is irrelevant. To catch a woman's attention, it is all about the confidence you display when approaching her.
Here are 10 surefire ways to intrigue her every time:

1. Observe something. Make a comment about something you observe in the environment. This is especially effective at the grocery store. For example, if she is ordering a turkey sandwich, ask her if the turkey is good here. Make your comment immediate to the situation and it will seem perfectly natural. No matter where you are, there is always something interesting to comment on.

2. Smile. This shows her that you are friendly and confident. A genuine smile not only feels good to you, but will put her at ease while creating openness in the interaction -- a requirement for building rapport.

3. Do not hesitate. If you hesitate in your approach, this tells her that you are not feeling confident -- an immediate turn-off. When you see her, walk over to her within a short period of time (the three-second rule). Show her you are a man who knows what he wants and goes after it.

4. Positive body language. If you approach hunched over with your head down, you are sending negative information about yourself, which makes you dead in the water before you begin. Stand up straight, with shoulders back and chest out, and use a firm yet relaxed walk.

5. Not too fast. If you walk over too fast, you could likely trigger her internal alarm. A calm, casual approach is usually the best way to make her feel at ease with you.

6. Keep eye contact. Never be the first to break eye contact when you approach. If you do, this sends the message that you are not feeling good about approaching. When you use strong eye contact, she will feel more drawn to you. With practice, you can master this.

7. Listen up. Make sure you pay careful attention to what she says. Do not have your response pre-thought out. Women love a man who pays attention to the details of what she says. If you start throwing out random words, she will lose interest fast.

8. Do not fidget. Fidgeting after you approach is distracting and shows you are uncomfortable. If you communicate that you are uncomfortable, she will feel uncomfortable, too, and will close up. Practice being aware of your movements. Pay attention to those movements, or lack of movements, that communicate comfort and confidence.

9. Lighten your tone of voice. The tone of your voice is a very powerful tool. Approaching her in a light and playful tone is one of the best ways to start. You could also begin in a serious tone, accusing her of something like “ I hope you saved some turkey for me," followed by a quick smile to let her know you are joking. Practice playing with your vocal tone with your friends -- notice the different reactions you get when you say the exact same thing using varied tones and fluctuations.

10. Lean away from her. A man who leans in too far when he talks often makes a woman feel crowded. A better approach is to lean away from her slightly. This lets her know that you respect her space, boundaries, and are comfortable with yourself.
The key to making these tips work for you is putting them into practice! Practice these tips and see the reaction you get. When you put them all together, you will be surprised at their power.

Promotion - introduction to the promotional mix

Reference: http://tutor2u.net/business/marketing/promotion_mix.asp

It is not enough for a business to have good products sold at attractive prices. To generate sales and profits, the benefits of products have to be communicated to customers. In marketing, this is commonly known as "promotion".

Promotion is all about companies communicating with customers.

A business' total marketing communications programme is called the "promotional mix" and consists of a blend of advertising, personal selling, sales promotion and public relations tools. In this revision note, we describe the four key elements of the promotional mix in more detail.

It is helpful to define the four main elements of the promotional mix before considering their strengths and limitations.

(1) Advertising

Any paid form of non-personal communication of ideas or products in the "prime media": i.e. television, newspapers, magazines, billboard posters, radio, cinema etc. Advertising is intended to persuade and to inform. The two basic aspects of advertising are the message (what you want your communication to say) and the medium (how you get your message across)

(2) Personal Selling

Oral communication with potential buyers of a product with the intention of making a sale. The personal selling may focus initially on developing a relationship with the potential buyer, but will always ultimately end with an attempt to "close the sale".

(3) Sales Promotion

Providing incentives to customers or to the distribution channel to stimulate demand for a product.

(4) Publicity

The communication of a product, brand or business by placing information about it in the media without paying for the time or media space directly. otherwise known as "public relations" or PR.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Element of the Promotional Mix

Mix Element
Advantages
Disadvantages
Advertising

Good for building awareness

Effective at reaching a wide audience

Repetition of main brand and product positioning helps build customer trust

Impersonal - cannot answer all a customer's questions

Not good at getting customers to make a final purchasing decision

Personal Selling

Highly interactive - lots of communication between the buyer and seller

Excellent for communicating complex / detailed product information and features

Relationships can be built up - important if closing the sale make take a long time

Costly - employing a sales force has many hidden costs in addition to wages

Not suitable if there are thousands of important buyers

Sales Promotion

Can stimulate quick increases in sales by targeting promotional incentives on particular products

Good short term tactical tool

If used over the long-term, customers may get used to the effect

Too much promotion may damage the brand image

Public Relations

Often seen as more "credible" - since the message seems to be coming from a third party (e.g. magazine, newspaper)

Cheap way of reaching many customers - if the publicity is achieved through the right media

Risk of losing control - cannot always control what other people write or say about your product

The Pros and Cons of Mobile Phones

The mobile phone is mainly an accessory and is a typical part of our everyday wear. And because of the high demands and our fast-changing world, new mobile phone models are being produced on almost a daily basis. However, plenty of speculations about the advantages and disadvantages of using mobile phones have come about. So, here are some of them:

1.Fast Communication. The very obvious advantage of using these phones is that it provides convenient and fast communication. You can be out in another country while being able to contact your family in another area. You can also send text messages and even an e-mail through the use of your mobile phone. So, because of these, the old-fashioned snail mails have almost come to total extinction.

2. Fun Games. When you are waiting for somebody and you become so bored, you could play the games on it. Minutes or even hours may pass without you getting bored waiting for your friends.

3. Music. Most of these phones provide an MP3 or a radio function. Whether you are traveling or you just simply want to relax, you do not have to bring your portable CD player and your vast CD collection anymore because a lot of songs could be stored into your mobile phone's music library. You can also listen to live news and songs on the radio on it.

4. Pictures and Video. You would be able take pictures and videos through your mobile anytime, anywhere. You will not have to bring your digital camera, which is able to record and capture important moments at high quality, because such features are already included in your phone.

5. Calendar. Need to schedule meetings and appointments but your personal organizer is quite bulky? Worry no more, because the calendar feature in most mobile phones allows you to see the dates and store data, as well. This can serve as your mini personal organizer.

6. Alarm Clock. If you are traveling, this mobile phone feature comes in very importantly. You will not have to buy a separate alarm clock to wake you up in the morning.

7. Distraction. This is a disadvantage of the mobile phone that you should be aware of. If you are driving or in an important meeting, you should avoid using your mobile, so as not to distract your focus.

8. Prank calls and messages. Because SIM cards are disposable, it is quite difficult to trace those people who use their mobiles to fool people.

There are still plenty of advantages and disadvantages to using the mobile phone; however, the above mentioned are the most obvious. To avoid any trouble regarding your mobile, you should always remember to use your gadget properly.

Essay: The pros and cons of mobile phones for children

Today, a regulation about mobile phones for children was approved at the Ishikawa prefectural assembly (http://dailynews.yahoo.co.jp/fc/domestic/child_and_cellular_phone/). According to the regulation, parents must make efforts not to let their children have mobile phones except for the purpose of protection against disasters or prevention of crimes. It is natural that the opinion on this subject was divided between those in favor and those against. This essay will touch upon the pros and cons of this issue.

First of all, some sites which are accessible from mobile phones provide harmful information to children. They refer to drugs, shoplifts, and other crimes. Reading such contents will lead children to delinquencies.

Secondly, using mobile phones in the school prevent children from studying. If they browse mobile sites during the classes, they neither listen to what their teachers say nor take their notes. Moreover, mobile phones have a function as a memo pad, so that they can be used as a tool for cheating in examinations.

Mobile phones, however, are used as a important means for children to communicate with their friends. They make calls, send e-mail, and post comments in BBS to get along with their friends. If you did not have one, you might have had a lonely childhood.

In conclusion, although there are some advantages for children to have mobile phones, I personally think that they should not have the phones. What is the most important is that we try to make children realize that they can live and enjoy their lives without mobile phones.

Pros and Cons of Using a Mobile Phones

mobile-phones I have been using mobile phones for the past 10 years and have understood and faced the advantages and disadvantages of using a mobile phone. Mobile phones are used by almost everybody these days. When you meet a new person or when you have a new friend, one the information that you take from that person is his / her mobile phone number.

Using mobile phones has lots of advantages and disadvantages and most you will be aware of that. Earlier days, when we are out of home or office, we need to search for a public telephone booth to make a phone call, but now, just pick up your mobile phone and dial. I am trying to list the Pros and cons of using a mobile phone in this post.

Advantages of using a mobile phone

Always connected

You are always connected, anybody who knows your mobile number can contact you. If you are travelling out of your territory or to another country, you can use the roaming facility to be connected anywhere and all the time. You can can use features like Text messaging to send messages, receive messages, send greetings, MMS for sending pictures, get information like news, flight timings and many more features

Internet Access

Now most of the mobile phone service providers has GPRS or EDGE or 3G enabled network. You can using internet anytime and anywhere. If you need to check your mail, you can do that when you are travelling or out of your office. You can reply to important messages or emails from your mobile phone itself. Features like Microsoft Exchange and Blackberry are really great. When you receive an email at your server, you get it pushed to your mobile phone. Latest PDA’s, or iPhone are not just mobile phones, you even term it as Mobile Office. I get all my mails pushed to my HTC TyTN II. Even if I am travelling, I am always aware of the important messages and I can respond quickly with out entering my office. I use remote desktop with my Pocket PC using wifi connections, through which I can access all my office desktop computers from anywhere in the World. There is an excellent service called Logmein, which is something I have been using for long time. Other excellent feature of mobile internet is that you can use internet sharing to using internet on your laptop while you are travelling. Just connect your PDA or pocket pc or your mobile phone with GPRS or EDGE or 3G internet and use it on your laptop. Other features like bluetooth, infrared are something very much I use. I do post articles using my mobile phone which is something I really need badly.

Other features like calendars, contacts, task, reminders are really something which cannot be missed. Once you use these kind of features, it will be very difficult to mange your day without a mobile phone.

Disadvantages of using a Mobile Phone

Always Connected

I mentioned this as an advantage above, but that’s a big disadvantage too. You are always connected to the world, you are always responsible for answering a phone call or if you are using a Blackberry or a Windows Mobile 5.0, you get emails which you need to respond instantly because your company or your clients expects this from you. You may not really understand the ill side of this, but your family or kids will feel this much more. If you are on a vacation and you are roaming, your office expects you to reply to the emails or the phone calls that you receive on your mobile. You lose your privacy, your freedom to be free from your daily routine work when you are connected.

Health Hazard

Using mobile phones for long time are definitely bad for health. The radiation caused by Mobile phones are of concern and experts believe that its bad for health.

Using mobile phones are very important in today’s world, but we need to make sure that we get enough freedom and time to spend with our family and make sure we don’t overuse to spoil our health

Technology help people to learn more and quickly. Agree or disagree?

Essay 1:

Everything that sorrounds us now is a by-product of modern technology. If we are gonna compare the quality of life before, and today, we would notice a great advantage. For this reason, I definitely agree that technology has help people to learn more quickly, because of its convenience, preciseness, and simplicity.

First reason why I think that technology aids people to learn more quickly is, because of convenience. The advent of new technologies had also improve a lot of things arround us, thus making our life a lot easier. For example, during ancient times when light wasn't invented yet, people are just relying on candles as their source of light. I would say that it might have been so difficult to study if I am in that position, because the amount of illumination that a candle could bring is not enough to sustain me on my reading. However, because of the the advances in technology now, we are able to enjoy the convenience of incandescent bulbs.

Second reason why technology has help people to learn faster is because of its preciseness. One of the things that is hard to understand would be the different science subjects. Like for example biochemistry which deals with the study of life in relation to chemical build up. One of the topics that had really stalled me in studying this was the DNA. I would say that I did read the topic for five times before I was able to fully understand it. If not for the 3 dimensional model that is available now, it would have been difficult for me to picture what I have been trying to understand.

Finally, the last reason which makes technology easier and quicker for people to learn is because of its simplicity. One of the perfect example would be the use of computers. During olden times, one would need to study tomes of books, on the other hand, at this modern time one doesn't need to bother borrowing books, nor going to the library to study one. Everything can be found in the internet. The beauty of using the internet is that it is not complicated. Almost anybody can learn how to use it.

In conclusion, I agree that technology has helped us to learn more because of its convenience, which has upgraded our quality of life, preciseness as it gives the actual replica of what we need to know, and lastly, the simplicity of its use had made it easier to learn.

Essay 2:

Seeing is believing that means, many of the human beings have tendency to believe quickly only when, they see it. Yes, i agree with the statement,
technology helped people to learn more and quickly. There are several reasons and examples for my reasoning. First example is, Internet. Through internet,
people can get any information that they want.

Earlier, that is before invention of internet, it was difficult to get that much information because of less
number of libraries and high cost of books that every one could not afford. But after the invention of internet it became so easy because any one can type
the topic of the information on the google and can get the information that they want.

In case of students, the information that they get from internet is
very easy for them to gasp because, most of information on the internet is in the designed form. It also include the colored pictures. So it became so easy
for students to grasp. So internet help the student to learn more and grasp quickly.

Secondly projectors. Through projectors, student can see the pictures related to their concepts and it makes easy for them to create a rough
delineate of the concept in their mind. So projector make the concept easy to understand for students. They can grasp it quickly as well as remember it for
long time. So projector created the interest about study in most of the students mind.

`So finally to wrap up, Technology helped people to learn more and to grasp the things quickly.

Job Interview Answer: Why Are You Leaving Your Job?

One of the questions that is typically asked in an interview is "Why are you leaving your job?" or "Why did you leave your job?" if you have already moved on. If you were fired from your job, use these answers to respond. If you left of your own accord, review these suggestions on how best to answer and tailor your response to meet your particular situation. Be direct and focus your interview answer on the future, especially if your leaving wasn't under the best of circumstances.

Don't Badmouth Your Boss

Regardless of why you left, don't speak badly about your previous employer. The interviewer may wonder if you will be bad-mouthing his company next time you're looking for work. I once interviewed a person who told me that her last employer was terrible. They didn't pay her enough, the hours were awful and she hated the job. That company happened to be my company's biggest, and most important, customer. And there is no way I would have hired someone who felt that way, justified or not, about our valuable client. So, she gave up any opportunity of getting the job as soon as she answered the "Why did you leave?" question.

Prepare answers to typical job interview questions, like this one, in advance. Practice your responses so you sound positive, and clear, about your circumstances and your goals for the future.

Sample answers to the interview question "Why did you leave your job?

  • I found myself bored with the work and looking for more challenges. I am an excellent employee and I didn't want my unhappiness to have any impact on the job I was doing for my employer.
  • There isn't room for growth with my current employer and I'm ready to move on to a new challenge.
  • I'm looking for a bigger challenge and to grow my career and I couldn't job hunt part time while working. It didn't seem ethical to use my former employer's time.
  • I was laid-off from my last position when our department was eliminated due to corporate restructuring.
  • I'm relocating to this area due to family circumstances and left my previous position in order to make the move.
  • I've decided that is not the direction I want to go in my career and my current employer has no opportunities in the direction I'd like to head.
  • After several years in my last position, I'm looking for an company where I can contribute and grow in a team-oriented environment.
  • I am interested in a new challenge and an opportunity to use my technical skills and experience in a different capacity than I have in the past.
  • I recently received my degree and I want to utilize my educational background in my next position.
  • I am interested in a job with more responsibility, and I am very ready for a new challenge.
  • I left my last position in order to spend more time with my family. Circumstances have changed and I'm more than ready for full-time employment again.
  • I am seeking a position with a stable company with room for growth and opportunity for advancement.
  • I was commuting to the city and spending a significant amount of time each day on travel. I would prefer to be closer to home.
  • To be honest, I wasn't considering a move, but, I saw this job posting and was intrigued by the position and the company. It sounds like an exciting opportunity and an ideal match with my qualifications.
  • This position seemed like an excellent match for my skills and experience and I am not able to fully utilize them in my present job.
  • The company was cutting back and, unfortunately, my job was one of those eliminated.

Naming Tradition in Cambodia

Discover the beauty and significance of the Cambodian names and their meanings.

Names are one of the things that people and places have in common. Various naming traditions exist among different ethnics groups. Cambodian names consist of a surname and a given name, in most of the cases there are no middle names.

An individual is named after various themes like nature, morality and good behavior, in addition to this; names are often taken from the Buddhist religion to which 90% of the Cambodians belong.
This shows that naming convention depends on a range of factors like area, class, culture, religion etc. The keeping of Khmer names in Cambodia is a very important element. Every Khmer name has a beautiful meaning. The meanings of Cambodian names are generally very simple and generally define a positive characteristic.

General meaning of Cambodian names

Understanding the naming conventions of different cultures is important for anyone who wishes to identify people in a diverse country. People in Cambodia have a lot of nonwestern names therefore spellings can vary. Common Cambodian names include Balin, Chea, Cheata, Cheng, Dara where as familiar family names are Chak, Chop and San.

Women in Cambodia are given names of things of beauty, while men are given names of virtues. Khmer names are pronounced with a stress placed on the last syllable therefore they are shortened for informal use by pronouncing only the last syllable of the name. There are many Cambodian names that cannot be imitated in English as Khmer names may be combined into one name and can be difficult to pronounce. People in Cambodia also have unisex names like “Vanna” which means “gold”.

The names of Cambodian gods are mostly in Sanskrit. The name of the gods and the dignitaries are listed in an index by “Monsieur Coeds”. In Cambodia the names of the smaller places are more often Khmer than Sanskrit so that the difference in the meaning is clearly visible.

Khmer & Sanskrit names

Names in Cambodia can be a hybrid of Khmer as well as Sanskrit. Khmer names very often reflect a feature of the environment where as Sanskrit names although possessing the same themes tend to have imaginative first elements. The Monsieur’s list consists of over 450 Sanskrit names but does not include the names of the workers and that of humbler people. These reflect ideas which may be of religious nature: Craddah/believing, Krisnadatta/’given to Krishna’, Akasadeva/’Sky-god’, Adityasvami/’Sun-lord’ etc.

Loan words or concrete nouns are names which are connected to religious, political roles and duties. Examples of some of these names are: Kulapati/’Superior’, Purohita/’Chaplain’, Prabhu/’Supreintendant’, Yajamana/’One who carries out an offering’, Guru/’Perceptor’, Vadya/’Musician’.

The first Khmer names, of the 7th and 8th century A.D gave practical information about religious foundations, on the other hand Khmer names were from proper literature. These names had been exposed for several centuries to Indian influence and contained many Sanskrit words.

Many Asian languages are spoken in Cambodia and that is the main reason that Chinese and Vietnamese names are heard frequently. Many words used in Khmer come from French also but this language is used with the outside world

IT'S ALL IN A NAME
Korean, Hmong, Laotian and Cambodian

Understanding the naming conventions of other cultures is important for an investigator or for anyone wishing to certainly and correctly identify people in our diverse country. The following column is an attempt to assist the reader in correctly applying the conventions of uniquely ethnic names so identification is possible. This article should not be interpreted as indicating any unusual prevalence of any specific ethnic group toward unlawful or immoral activities, since no such intention exists. In each issue of The John Cooke Fraud Report, we will explore the mysteries of the naming practices of different ethnic cultures. In this issue, we revisit Korean, Hmong, Laotian and Cambodian names.

Korean is the official language of North and South Korea. It is spoken by well over 50 million people. Korean speakers are concentrated in the Korean peninsula as well as in China, Japan and parts of the former Soviet Union.

Chinese has had a large influence on the Korean language. Over half of the vocabulary of Korean is said to have come from Chinese, and the earliest Korean language records are written in Chinese pictographic characters. A separate Korean alphabet was invented in A. D. 1443 by King Seo Jong. Originally the alphabet contained 11 vowels and 17 consonants. In 1730, the alphabet was simplified and four symbols were dropped. Today the alphabet contains 10 vowels and 14 consonants.

It is often difficult to translate directly between Korean and English sounds because some do not have a direct correlation. Sounds that are distinctive in English, for example “K” and “G,” are translated by a single Korean letter which falls some where between the two. A separate, harder “K” sound is represented by a different Korean character. Therefore, Koreans named Kang who arrive in an English-speaking country may find their name translated as either Gang or Kang. In the same way, a “B” may be translated as either a “B” or a “P. “

Other spelling irregularities can occur when a Korean name is similar to an English name or word. For example, the name Yung could be translated as Young simply because it is the recognized English spelling for that combination of sounds. In the same fashion, one of the most common Korean family names, if the sounds were properly translated into English, would be written as Bocg. However, whether because of tradition or poor translation, Koreans with the name Bocg who come to the United States most often receive an official translation of their name to Park. Other possible translations of Bocg are Pak and Paek. Other names that are often changed to fit our patterns are Su, which can become Sue, or Mo, which can become Moe.

Korean names usually consist of three one-syllable words. The first syllable is the family name. The second and third syllables are the given name. A typical Korean name might be Kim Je Young.

The majority of Korean families are named Ghim, Bocg, Jong and Rhee or Ee. When these names are translated into English, they are rarely translated exactly. Ghim becomes Kim; Bocg becomes Park, Pak or Paek; Jong becomes Chong; and Rhee becomes Yi or Lee. Other common family names are Choi or Cho, Kang or Gang, and Hong.

Korean given names consist of two one-syllable words. The names are chosen both for their meaning and for their sound combinations. Some typical given names would be Jun Mo, Uh Sook, Je Yung, Dong Ku, and Sue Min.

Possibilities for confusion exist when the two-syllable given name is forced to fit into an English mold. The two syllables are separated into the equivalent of our first and middle names and the order of the name is often changed to reflect our “first middle last” preferred order. A Korean named Kang Uh Sook might be listed as Kang Uh Sook; Uh Suk Gang or even Ooh Gang.

Other Koreans, especially young people, may Americanize their names. Jun becomes John or Jon. Hong becomes Hank or Han. Dong becomes Don.

Claims professionals who are working with Korean names need to keep these variations in mind when submitting names for indexing. As with other nationalities that do not follow Western-naming traditions, it may be advisable to index under various combinations of the claimant’s name; to substitute similar sounding letters, such as “G” for “K” or “B” for “P,” or to try different spellings of the name. If your claimant’s name is Park, try Bocg, Paek or Pak. If the name is Kim Dong Ku, try those same three syllables with varying spellings and word orders. A little flexibility and creativity could pay off.

Hmong Names

Since the end of the Vietnam War, over 100,000 Hmong have immigrated to the United States. The majority is located in Minnesota, Wisconsin and California.

In dealing with Hmong names, the claims professional may encounter several problems. First, is the order of the names. The Hmong have a clan name and either one or two given names, but traditionally, the order can vary depending on what sounds best to the individual. Many have adopted the standard American practices, however, placing the clan name last.

A second problem arises from the erratic spelling of Hmong names. The Hmong did not have a written language until the middle of the twentieth century when one was created for them by foreign missionaries. As a result, many Hmong are illiterate in either their own language or English.

Some Hmong women continue to use their clan name after marriage but many will adopt their husband’s name in keeping with American tradition.

The following is a list of common Hmong clan names and their pronunciations. Please note that spelling of Hmong names can vary.

Bee (bee) Khang (kahng) Yang (yahng)

Chang (chahng) Moua (mooah) Xiong (sheeong)

Cheng (cheng) Neng (neng)

Chue (cheu) Pao (pow)

Dang (dahng) Sao (sow)

Fang (fahng) Sy, See (see)

Ge (zhay) Thao, Tor (taw)

Ger, Yeu (dzur) Thong (tawng)

Hang (hahng) Tov (too)

Lee, Ly, Le Vang (vahng)

Lor, Lo (law) Vue (voo)

The following list includes the most common Hmong given names. As with the clan names, spelling is not standardized. In addition, children may be given American names, with only their clan name reflecting their Hmong heritage.

Blia (bleeah) Kia (keeah) May (my)

Chia (cheeah) Koua, Kua (kooah) Neng (neng)

Doua, Dua (dooah) Lang (lahng) Nu (noo)

Gen (tsan)Lia (leeah) Yii (yee)

Hua (hooah) Mo (maw) You (jew)

Again, claims professionals must pay attention to possible variations in word order and spelling when indexing Hmong names. Steps to try include submitting the name with the order reversed or submitting with different spellings of the same name. For females, try both the wife’s and the husband’s clan names.

Cambodian Names

Cambodian, or Khmer, is spoken by over 5 million people. It is the official language of Kampuchea.

Cambodian names usually consist of two parts. The first name is the family name. The next is the individual’s given name. As with other nonwestern names, spelling can vary and some of the younger members of the community are given American names.

Common Cambodian family names and their pronunciation are listed below.

Chak (chawk) Sem (sem) Touch (tooch)

Chop (chop) Sok (sawk) Vuthy (vootee)

San (sahn) Som (sawm)

Common Cambodian given names are listed below.

Balin (bahlin) Leng (leng) Phuong (poong)

Chea (cheeah) Loveng (loong) Saroeung (sahroong)

Cheata (cheeaytah) Ly (lee) Serey (sayray)

Chheng (cheng) Narong (nahrong) Son (sawn)

Dara (dahrah) Naroeung (nahroong)

Cambodian names present challenges to claims professionals that are similar to those from other nationalities. When working with Cambodian claimants, it may be helpful to check various combinations of the names.

Laotian Names

The Laotian language (or Lao) is the official language of Laos. It is spoken by over 10 million people living in Laos and Thailand.

Laotian names consist of a given name followed by a family name. The given name may be made up of a common prefix and multiple suffixes.

Common Laotian family names are listed below with their pronunciations.

Bouphasiri (boopasiri)

Kaignavongsa (kyngnavongsah)

Kahmphoukeo (kahmpoo keo)

Konekhamsompnou (konkahmsompoo)

Koulavongsa (koolavongsah)

Nasirichampang (nasirichampang)

Pnommavongsay (pommavonsy)

Pharasovco (prasoovow)

Raitanabouavorn (ratanabuavorn)

Soukbandith (sookbahndit)

Common Laotian given names are listed below.

Bounmy (boonmee)

Bounsouan (boonsuan)

Bounteum (boonteum)

Bounthieng (boontieng)

Fasananh (fasanahn)

Khamphouang (kahmpwung)

Khamsavevi (kahmsavevi)

Oubonlamphanh (oobonlahmpahn)

Thongchanh (tongchahn)

Thongphoun (tongpoon)

Indexing Laotian claimants calls for both precision and a little creativity. Names such as those listed here are longer and more complex than most claims professionals usually handle. It would not be unusual to find that such names had been misspelled, either in the claims file or in previous Index entries. It is also possible that either one or both of the names might be shortened.
